If you want the sound of bluegrass, folk, and classic country in one guitar, it is hard to argue with a D-18. Mahogany back and sides give it a woody, focused voice that sits perfectly in a mix and cuts through a jam. We keep the D-18 family stocked in depth, and every one over $3K crosses our PLEK station before it goes home with you.

About the Martin D-18

Martin introduced the D-18 in the early 1930s, and it quickly became the workhorse of American flatpicking. Where its rosewood sibling the D-28 booms, the D-18 barks: strong fundamentals, quick note decay, and a punch that stays clear in a full band. It is the guitar you hear behind decades of bluegrass and Americana records, and the first dreadnought many serious players ever save up for.

The family runs deeper than the standard model. The D-18 Authentic 1937 recreates the prewar guitar bolt for bolt, with hide glue construction and a torrefied Adirondack top. The D-18 Modern Deluxe pairs vintage looks with modern touches like a titanium truss rod. Custom Shop D-18 builds and the Super D-18 add wood and appointment upgrades you will not find in the standard catalog.

The only real way to pick between them is to play them, and our Roswell showroom makes that easy. Two D-18s from the same year can feel like different guitars, and the right one announces itself in about thirty seconds of playing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Martin D-18 and a D-28?

The D-18 uses mahogany back and sides for a dry, punchy, midrange-forward voice. The D-28 uses East Indian rosewood, which adds deeper bass and shimmering overtones. Flatpickers who want clarity and punch often land on the D-18; players who want power and sparkle tend toward the D-28.

What makes the D-18 Authentic 1937 special?

It is Martin's museum-grade recreation of the prewar D-18: hide glue construction, torrefied Adirondack spruce top, authentic prewar neck shape, and period-correct bracing. It is the closest thing to a golden-era D-18 you can buy new.

Do you set up D-18s before shipping?

Yes. Every guitar we sell over $3K is dressed on our PLEK machine, the only one in Georgia, then inspected and set up by our techs before it ships or goes home from the showroom.
