About the Martin D-28 and HD-28

The D-28 earned its reputation on stage and in the studio with everyone from Hank Williams to Jimmy Page. East Indian rosewood gives it thundering low end and complex overtones, and the guitar simply gets better as the top opens up with age and playing.

The HD-28 revives the prewar herringbone look with scalloped X bracing, which loosens the top and adds warmth and responsiveness. Beyond the standards, the D-28 Authentic 1937 Aged recreates the holy-grail prewar guitar down to the finish checking, the Modern Deluxe adds contemporary refinements, and signature models from Billy Strings and Rich Robinson put working-artist specs on the same platform.

Every one of them hangs in our Roswell showroom under proper humidification, and we encourage you to play them against each other. The difference between a D-28 and an HD-28 is easy to read about and much easier to hear.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a D-28 and an HD-28?

The HD-28 adds herringbone body trim and scalloped X bracing. Scalloped braces let the top move more freely, so the HD-28 sounds warmer and more responsive, while the straight-braced D-28 is tighter and more focused. Both share the same rosewood and spruce recipe.

Is the D-28 good for bluegrass?

It is the standard by which bluegrass rhythm guitar is judged. The rosewood low end drives a jam, and the strong projection keeps you audible against banjo and fiddle. Billy Strings plays a D-28 based on his grandfather's, and we stock his signature model.

What is special about the D-28 Authentic 1937?

It is Martin's exact recreation of a 1937 D-28: hide glue, torrefied Adirondack top, prewar bracing and neck carve, and on Aged versions, a finish distressed to feel like the vintage original. It is the flagship of the modern Martin line.
