Not everyone needs a dreadnought. Martin's auditorium-size OM and 000 guitars trade a little boom for balance, comfort, and note-to-note clarity, which is exactly why they dominate fingerstyle playing and recorded singer-songwriter work. This is one of the deepest parts of our Martin selection, spanning Standard, Modern Deluxe, Retro Plus, Custom Shop, and artist models.

About Martin OM and 000 Guitars

The OM and the 000 use the same body: a 15 inch lower bout that tucks under your arm and balances bass, mids, and treble more evenly than a dreadnought. The difference is the neck. An OM pairs the body with Martin's long 25.4 inch scale and a wider 1 3/4 inch nut, giving fingerstyle players extra string tension and spacing. A 000 uses the shorter 24.9 inch scale, which slackens the strings slightly for easy bends and a slinkier feel.

That one change produces two personalities. OMs like the OM-28 and OM-42 are articulate and piano-like, the classic fingerstyle machines. Short-scale 000s like the 000-18 and Eric Clapton's beloved 000-28EC feel effortless under the fretting hand and reward a lighter touch. The OMJM John Mayer splits the difference with its own comfort-first spec.

From the all-mahogany 000-15M to Custom Shop and anniversary builds, the range here is wide, and the best way to find yours is to sit in the showroom and work through them. If you cannot make it to Roswell, call us and we will play them for you over the phone or on video.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Martin OM and a 000?

They share the same auditorium body. The OM uses a long 25.4 inch scale and 1 3/4 inch nut width, which adds tension, projection, and string spacing for fingerstyle. The 000 uses a short 24.9 inch scale that feels slinkier and easier to bend. Same box, two different feels.

Are OM and 000 guitars good for fingerstyle?

They are the default recommendation. The balanced response keeps bass lines from swallowing melody notes, and the comfortable body encourages long playing sessions. The OM's wider nut gives fingers extra room to work.

Which Martin body size is right for me?

If you strum hard or drive a bluegrass jam, a dreadnought like a D-18 or D-28 delivers the power. If you fingerpick, record, or just want a guitar that is comfortable for hours, an OM or 000 is usually the better fit. Playing both back to back settles it fast.
