About the Fender Custom Shop

Fender opened the Custom Shop in Corona, California in 1987 so its builders could make instruments the production line could not: period-correct reissues, small-run specials, and personal builds for working artists. Today the shop's Time Machine series recreates the Stratocasters and Telecasters of the 1950s and 1960s with era-accurate necks, pickups, and hardware, finished anywhere from showroom-new NOS to road-worn Heavy Relic.

Team Built guitars are made by the Custom Shop's staff of builders, while Masterbuilt instruments are made start to finish by an individual Master Builder and documented with a certificate of authenticity. Every one arrives at Righteous Guitars for a full inspection and setup before it goes home with you.

How to Choose a Fender Custom Shop Guitar

Start with the build type, then the aging level, then the model family. The sections below explain how the range breaks down; the specific neck carve, pickup set, and finish decide the rest, and we are happy to compare guitars for you.

Masterbuilt vs Team Built

Team Built guitars are made by the Custom Shop's team of builders and cover most of the range, including Time Machine reissues and limited editions. Masterbuilt guitars are made start to finish by a single Master Builder, carry that builder's name on the certificate of authenticity, and sit at the top of the price range. A great Team Built guitar gives up nothing in playability; Masterbuilt is about the individual builder's touch and long-term collectability. If a Masterbuilt build catches your eye, ask us about the builder and the story behind the guitar.

Time Machine and Relic Levels

The Time Machine series recreates specific years of Stratocaster, Telecaster, and other classics, and the aging level sets the look and feel. NOS (New Old Stock) looks like it just left the factory in its model year. Closet Classic adds light checking and dulled hardware, like a guitar kept under the bed for decades. Journeyman Relic shows honest player wear, and Heavy Relic looks like it has done decades of bar gigs. Aging is cosmetic: underneath, each one is a brand new guitar, so choose the level that feels right in your hands.

Stratocasters, Telecasters, Esquires, and Offsets

Most of the Custom Shop range is Stratocasters and Telecasters, and we keep a dedicated collection for each: browse Custom Shop Stratocaster and Custom Shop Telecaster for the full range. The shop also builds Esquires and Nocasters for players chasing the earliest Fender designs, plus Jazzmasters and Jaguars in period-correct trim. These rarer models arrive in smaller numbers and rotate quickly, so if you are hunting one, contact us.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Team Built and Masterbuilt?

Team Built guitars are made by the Fender Custom Shop team, while Masterbuilt guitars are built under an individual Master Builder. Both can be excellent; the right choice depends on the specific guitar, specs, feel, and budget.

How much is a Fender Custom Shop guitar?

Custom Shop pricing depends on the build. Most Team Built guitars, including Time Machine reissues and limited editions, sit in the mid four figures, while Masterbuilt instruments and the rarest limited runs climb higher, with some reaching five figures. Every guitar on this page shows its current price, financing is available, and trade-ins can offset the cost. If you have a budget in mind, contact us and we will point you to the strongest options within it.

Is PLEK service available?

Yes. PLEK service is done in-house on Georgia's only PLEK station, and it is included on every guitar we sell over $3,000.

Do you accept trades toward Fender Custom Shop guitars?

Yes. Righteous Guitars considers trade-ins toward Fender Custom Shop purchases. Contact us with details about your instrument.

Can you help compare two Fender Custom Shop guitars?
